There's A Lot To Do For Seniors

The City of Las Cruces has several facilities that provide a social and support base for seniors. The Munson Center located at 975 S. Mesquite Street is the hub of the City of Las Cruces senior programs. The Center serves hot meals, offers regularly scheduled educational and recreational classes, a senior’s companion program, and serves as liaison between seniors and government agencies. The Mesilla Park Recreation Center at 304 Bell Avenue offers seniors arts, crafts and exercise programs. The Henry Benavidez Community Center located at 1045 McClure Road offers meals and senior programs. For more information about City of Las Cruces senior programs call (505) 528-3000.

Seniors can broaden their horizons through Elderhostel and the Academy of Learning. Both programs are part of the Community Education program at Doña Ana Branch Community College. Elderhostel presents programs year round and helps to meet the needs of knowledge-seeking seniors. For more information on Elderhostel and the Academy of Learning contact the community education programs at (505) 527-7527.

Las Cruces offers many parks that have walking trails to provide a pleasant few hours for seniors. The Sun Country Striders is an organization that promotes health through walking. Events are scheduled throughout the year at historical or scenic locations. For more information please write to: Sun Country Striders, LTD., P.O. Box 6787, Las Cruces, NM 88006-8787. The Mesilla Valley Mall opens its doors early to walkers and many seniors take advantage of the opportunity to walk and exercise, particularly in the winter months.
