A comprehensive land-grant institution of higher learning, New Mexico State University was founded in 1888 as an agricultural college and preparatory school. Dedicated to teaching, research, and service at the undergraduate and graduate levels, NMSU is a NASA Space Grant College and Hispanic-serving institution.

The statewide system provides learning opportunities to all the citizens of the state through cooperative extension offices in the 33 New Mexico counties, 13 research and science centers statewide, campuses in Alamogordo, Carlsbad, Doņa Ana County, Grants and Las Cruces, an Albuquerque Center and distance education programs. New Mexico is our campus.

Our statewide presence allows us to provide opportunities for teaching and learning, research and service to all of New Mexico and students across the country and around the world.

Enrollment
Total fall 2006 enrollment for the NMSU system was 27,150. The Las Cruces campus enrollment was 16,415, including 3,227 graduate students. Minority enrollment for the NMSU system was approximately 53% percent (45.6 percent Hispanic, 3.7 percent American Indian, 2.7 percent African-American and 1.2 percent Asian-American).

Faculty and staff
There are more than 1,700 faculty members, and almost 4,000 staff. About 1,100 of the faculty and 3,400 staff members are located on the Las Cruces campus.

Research
NMSU is a very active research university, with research and public service expenditures exceeding $140 million in 2005-2006.

Athletics
A member of the Western Athletic Conference, the university sponsors 16 intercollegiate sports, 6 for men and 10 for women. Pan American Center seats 12,590. Aggie Memorial Stadium seats 30,000.

Arts and recreation
The university offers a variety of arts and recreational activities. Museums and art galleries, professional theater, music ensembles and symphony, visiting artists, national performers, professional road shows, on-campus public radio and TV stations, a student-run radio station, an 18-hole golf course, tennis and activity centers and natatorium are available at NMSU Las Cruces.
